Check Engine Light On? Here’s What to Do Before You Go to the Mechanic
A check engine light isn’t always an emergency — but it’s never nothing. Here’s what the light actually means, which OBD-II codes matter, and how to walk into the shop prepared.

Your check engine light came on. Maybe it’s steady, maybe it’s flashing. Either way, your first instinct is probably to ignore it for a few days and hope it goes away.
Sometimes that’s fine. Sometimes it’s a $30 fix you can handle yourself. And sometimes ignoring it costs you a $3,000 catalytic converter. The trick is knowing which is which before you go to the shop.
Steady vs Flashing: The First Thing That Matters
There’s a critical distinction most drivers miss:
- Steady check engine light: the car’s onboard computer has logged a fault. Not an emergency, but it needs attention within days or weeks. Safe to drive home and to a shop.
- Flashing or blinking check engine light: active misfire. Unburned fuel is being dumped into the exhaust and your catalytic converter is being damaged in real time. Pull over and reduce load. This is a tow-to-shop situation, not a drive-home situation.
Most check engine lights are steady. If yours is flashing, treat it as urgent.
Get the Code (Free or $25)
Every check engine light corresponds to a specific OBD-II code in your car’s computer. Knowing the code transforms the conversation with your shop from “my light is on” to “my car is throwing a P0420” — which makes diagnosis faster and easier for everyone.
Two ways to read the code yourself:
- Free scan at auto parts stores: AutoZone, Advance, O’Reilly, and Pep Boys all do free OBD-II scans. Drive in, they plug in a reader, they hand you the code in 5 minutes. They’ll often suggest a part. Sometimes that’s the right fix, sometimes the code points to something deeper — verify with a shop before approving major work.
- $25 Bluetooth OBD-II scanner: the BAFX or Veepeak scanners pair with a free app on your phone (Torque Pro, Car Scanner). Keep it in the glovebox and read codes whenever you want. Pays for itself the first time.
Once you have the code, search it: “P0420 [your make and model]” usually surfaces accurate community-vetted information about typical causes and fixes for your specific car.
The 10 Most Common Check Engine Codes (And What They Cost)
- P0420 / P0430 — Catalytic converter efficiency below threshold: $800–$2,500 for a real cat replacement. Cheaper options exist (universal cats, sometimes a misreporting oxygen sensor) — ask the shop to confirm which.
- P0171 / P0174 — System too lean: often a vacuum leak ($100–$300), a dirty MAF sensor ($50–$150), or a failing fuel pump ($600–$1,200).
- P0300 series — Random or specific cylinder misfire: typically ignition coils ($150–$400) or spark plugs ($100–$300). Worth diagnosing quickly to protect the cat.
- P0442 / P0455 / P0456 — EVAP leak: often just a loose or failing gas cap. Try tightening the cap first; light may clear in a day. If not, $50–$400.
- P0128 — Coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature: thermostat replacement, $200–$500.
- P0401 — EGR system flow insufficient: EGR valve cleaning or replacement, $300–$700.
- P0011 / P0014 — Camshaft position timing over-advanced: often VVT solenoid or low oil pressure. $200–$800.
- P0700 — Transmission control system malfunction: needs proper transmission diagnostic. Can be a sensor ($300) or rebuild ($2,500+).
- U0100 — Lost communication with ECM: wiring or module issue, usually $200–$1,500.
- P0136 — O2 sensor circuit malfunction: oxygen sensor replacement, $150–$400.
What to Do Right Now
- Note when it came on and any symptoms (rough idle, reduced power, weird smells, mileage drop)
- Check the obvious: is your gas cap loose? Tighten it. Drive normally for a day or two — the light may clear on its own
- Get the code: free scan at the auto parts store, or your own $25 scanner
- Search the code with your make/model to learn what’s typical and what’s not
- If the issue seems minor and you have the skills, you can handle it (loose gas cap, swapping a sensor)
- If it’s anything significant, walk into the shop with the code in hand
When to NOT Drive the Car
- The light is flashing
- The engine is misfiring (you’ll feel a stutter or rough idle)
- Temperature gauge is climbing toward red
- You smell coolant, oil, or fuel
- The car has noticeably less power than normal
- You hear unusual mechanical noises
In any of these scenarios, pull over and call for a tow. The cost of damage from driving through these symptoms can far exceed the cost of the tow.

Walking into the shop with the OBD-II code already in hand is the single most useful thing you can do as a driver. It tells the shop you’re an engaged customer and turns the conversation into a fast, collaborative diagnosis.
