A/C repair cost calculator

A/C repairs range from cheap to painful. See where your car's likely to land before anyone touches it.

1. Your vehicle
2. What does the A/C need?

Pick your vehicle to see an A/C repair estimate.

These estimates are based on what other drivers report paying through Fixxr for similar repairs on similar vehicles. Treat the number as a ballpark, not a guaranteed quote, and not always exact. Your real price moves with your exact make, model, year, engine, location, the parts you choose, and the shop. Some high-end jobs like carbon-ceramic brakes, exotic glass, or engine-out repairs can run well past the range shown, so get a direct quote for those. The only real number is a price from a shop that has seen your car.

Why A/C quotes are all over the map

“A/C not blowing cold” is a symptom, not a diagnosis — and the fixes behind it span a tenfold price range. That's wider than almost any other common repair, so an honest shop diagnoses before quoting. A recharge is refrigerant and an hour's labor. A leak might be a $20 o-ring or a condenser punctured by road debris. A failed compressor is a proper job: the part, a system flush, a new receiver-drier, and a recharge.

ServiceMainstream carWhat it covers

Recharge + leak diagnosis$250 to $550Dye or electronic leak detection
Compressor replacement$910 to $1,700Compressor, drier, flush, recharge

Questions worth asking the shop

  • Was the leak found? — if the system was low, ask where the refrigerant went before paying for a recharge.
  • Is the compressor confirmed dead? — a bad clutch, relay, or pressure switch can mimic compressor failure at a fraction of the cost.
  • What's included in the compressor job? — a proper quote covers the drier, a flush, and the recharge, not just the part.
  • Which refrigerant? — newer cars use R-1234yf, which costs meaningfully more per pound than the older R-134a.

A/C repair FAQ

A/C repair cost questions

  • How much does it cost to fix car A/C?
It depends enormously on what's wrong, which is why A/C quotes vary more than almost any other repair. A simple recharge runs roughly $150–$320, recharge plus leak diagnosis roughly $250–$550, and a compressor replacement roughly $910–$1,700 on a mainstream vehicle. The honest answer is that nobody knows the real number until the system is diagnosed.
  • Why is my A/C blowing warm air?
The most common cause is low refrigerant, and since the system is sealed, low refrigerant means it leaked out somewhere. Other culprits include a failed compressor or compressor clutch, a bad pressure switch, an electrical fault, or a blend-door problem inside the dash that has nothing to do with refrigerant at all.
  • Is a recharge without finding the leak a waste of money?
Often, yes. If the system was low, the refrigerant went somewhere, and a recharge alone means you'll likely be back next summer. A slow leak on an older car can sometimes make an occasional top-up a reasonable choice, but for anything that loses its charge within a season, pay for the leak diagnosis so the fix actually sticks.
  • Why is compressor replacement so expensive?
The compressor is the heart of the system and one of the priciest parts on the list. When one fails — especially if it seizes — it can scatter metal debris through the lines, so a proper job includes flushing the system, replacing the receiver-drier and often the expansion valve, then recharging. Cutting those corners is how a compressor job fails a month later.
  • Can I just use a DIY recharge can?
The parts-store cans can work as a short-term top-up, but they're easy to overfill, many include sealers that can gum up shop equipment, and they don't tell you where the refrigerant went. If the A/C matters to you, a proper evacuation, measured recharge, and leak check is worth the difference.

You deserve a fair fix.
