Every word a shop might use on your estimate, explained in plain English. Know what the part does, and what it means for your wallet, before you say yes.
Ask better questions
You do not need to be a mechanic. You need the vocabulary to ask one good follow-up.
Understand what drives cost
Labor rate, book time, and OEM versus aftermarket move the total more than the part itself.
Know what is free
Recalls cost nothing, ever. Plenty of drivers pay for work a manufacturer owed them.
A
- ABS (anti-lock braking system)
- Pulses the brakes many times a second during a hard stop so the wheels never lock up and skid, which lets you keep steering while braking. If the ABS light is on, your normal brakes still work, but the anti-lock function may not.
- Aftermarket part
- A replacement part built by a company other than your carmaker. Quality runs the whole range, from noticeably worse than factory to genuinely better. Aftermarket is usually cheaper than OEM, so ask which one an estimate assumes. It is one of the biggest swings in a repair price.
- Alignment
- Adjusting the angles your wheels sit at so they point exactly where the suspension intends. Bad alignment pulls the car to one side and shreds tires early. Ballpark $80 to $150, and worth doing after suspension work or a new set of tires.
- Alternator
- The generator that recharges your battery and runs the electrical system while the engine is going. When it fails the car dies even with a healthy battery. Symptoms overlap heavily with a bad battery, so a good shop tests both before recommending either.
B
- Ball joint
- The pivot that connects a control arm to the wheel hub, letting the wheel steer and travel over bumps. Worn ones clunk over rough pavement. Treat it as a safety item: a ball joint that fails completely can let a wheel collapse.
- Book time
- The number of labor hours a standardized industry guide says a job should take. Shops bill book time, not the actual time on the clock. That is why a fast technician does not shrink your bill, and why two shops should quote nearly the same hours for the same repair even when their prices differ.
- Brake caliper
- The clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to slow the wheel. Calipers can seize, which drags that brake constantly, kills fuel economy, and cooks the pad. A seized caliper usually means replacing the caliper, pad, and rotor on that corner together.
- Brake fluid flush
- Replacing the hydraulic fluid that carries your foot's pressure to the brakes. Brake fluid absorbs water from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and can make the pedal go soft under hard use. Most makers ask for it every two to three years. Ballpark $100 to $150.
- Brake pad
- The block of friction material that presses against the rotor to stop the car. Pads are a normal wear item, commonly good for 30,000 to 70,000 miles depending on how and where you drive. City stop-and-go wears them fastest.
C
- Catalytic converter
- An exhaust component that converts the engine's harmful gases into less harmful ones. It is expensive, often $1,000 to $2,500 or more, because of the precious metals inside. It rarely dies on its own: a failed converter is usually the downstream bill for an ignored misfire or check engine light.
- Check engine light
- The dashboard light that means the engine computer has stored a trouble code. Solid generally means get it looked at soon. Flashing means an active misfire that can destroy your catalytic converter within minutes, so ease off and stop driving. Decode the light and the code here.
- Control arm
- A hinged link between the car's frame and the wheel hub that controls how the wheel moves up and down. Its rubber bushings and ball joint wear out and cause clunks or vague steering. Many are sold as a complete assembly, so the whole arm gets replaced even when only a bushing is worn.
- Coolant
- The antifreeze and water mix that carries heat out of the engine and into the radiator. It also stops freezing and internal corrosion. Low coolant is the single most common cause of overheating, and overheating is what turns a cheap hose into a cracked cylinder head.
- CV axle
- The shaft that sends power from the transmission to a front wheel, with constant-velocity joints at each end so it can turn and flex at the same time. A rhythmic clicking sound while turning is the classic worn CV joint symptom. Torn rubber boots are what let them fail early.
D
- Diagnostic fee
- What a shop charges to find out what is actually wrong, typically about an hour of labor ($80 to $200). You are paying for the technician's time and equipment, not for the repair itself. Plenty of shops credit it back if you have them do the work, so ask up front. Check whether a diagnostic fee is fair.
- Drivetrain
- The parts that carry power from the transmission out to the wheels: driveshaft, axles, and differential. People often use it loosely to include the engine, but powertrain is the right word for that.
F
- Flat-rate labor
- The billing system built on book time. The shop charges the guide's hours multiplied by its hourly rate, regardless of how long the job really takes. It is the industry standard, and it means the hours on your estimate come from that guide, not from a stopwatch.
G
- Gasket
- A seal between two mating parts that keeps fluid or pressure where it belongs. The gasket itself is often a few dollars. The labor to reach it is the entire bill, which is why a head gasket job costs thousands while the part costs almost nothing.
L
- Labor rate
- The shop's hourly charge for a technician's time, anywhere from about $80 to $200 or more depending on your region and the type of shop. Your labor cost is this rate times book time, so it helps to know both. A specialist or dealer often charges a higher rate for good reason, like training and equipment. See a typical range.
O
- OBD-II
- The standardized diagnostic system in every car sold in the US since 1996. A scanner plugs into a port under the dash and pulls stored trouble codes. Important nuance: a code names the system reporting a problem, not the broken part. That gap is what diagnosis is for.
- OEM
- Original equipment manufacturer. A part made by, or specifically for, the company that built your car, matching what came on it from the factory. It costs more than aftermarket. Worth paying for on sensors and safety parts, often overkill on things like brake rotors.
- Oxygen sensor
- A sensor in the exhaust that measures leftover oxygen so the computer can trim the fuel mixture correctly. A lazy or dead one hurts fuel economy and is one of the most common check-engine triggers. Ballpark $150 to $500 depending on how many you have and where they sit.
P
- Powertrain
- Everything that makes power and delivers it to the road: engine, transmission, and drivetrain together. Powertrain warranties usually run longer than bumper-to-bumper coverage because they cover fewer parts, though the ones they cover are the expensive ones.
R
- Rack and pinion
- The steering gear that turns your steering wheel's rotation into side-to-side movement at the front wheels. Age brings fluid leaks and slop in the steering. Replacement is a big-ticket job, often $800 to $2,000, and an alignment afterward is not optional.
- Recall
- A repair the manufacturer is required to perform for free when a defect affects safety or emissions. Safety recalls never expire and never cost you anything, even on a used car well out of warranty. Any franchise dealer must do the work at no charge. Look up your car's open recalls.
- Rotor
- The metal disc the brake pads clamp onto. Scored or warped rotors give you a pulsing brake pedal. They can be resurfaced if they are still thick enough, but modern rotors are thin enough that most shops just replace them with the pads.
S
- Serpentine belt
- The single long belt that drives your accessories: alternator, water pump, power steering, air conditioning. If it snaps you lose charging and often cooling within a few miles. It is cheap to replace on schedule, roughly $100 to $250, and expensive to ignore.
- Shop supplies fee
- A catch-all line item covering rags, cleaners, lubricants, and small hardware. A modest flat fee is completely normal. If it is a percentage of your total bill rather than a flat charge, it is worth asking what it covers. Any shop can walk you through it.
- Spark plug
- The part that ignites the fuel and air mix in each cylinder. Worn plugs cause misfires, rough idle, and poor economy. Modern iridium plugs often go 100,000 miles. The plugs are cheap; the price swing is entirely about how buried they are in your engine.
- Strut
- A shock absorber that is also a structural part of the suspension, holding the corner of the car up. Worn struts make the car float, nose-dive under braking, and wear tires in cups. Replace them in pairs. Struts and shocks are not interchangeable words.
- Suspension
- The whole system of springs, struts or shocks, arms, and bushings that keeps your tires planted and the body settled. Suspension wear shows up as noise over bumps, uneven tire wear, and steering that feels loose. It is a safety system, not a comfort feature.
T
- Timing belt
- A toothed rubber belt that keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning in sync. It is a scheduled replacement item, commonly every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. On an interference engine, a snapped belt lets the pistons strike the valves and can total the engine. Replacing it runs roughly $500 to $1,200, which is a bargain against the alternative. Estimate the job.
- Timing chain
- Does the same job as a timing belt, but as a metal chain designed to last the life of the engine. There is no scheduled replacement. Chains can still stretch on high-mileage engines, and the tell is a rattle for a second or two on a cold start. That repair is not cheap.
- Torque
- Twisting force. It has two meanings at a shop. One is the engine's pulling power. The other is the exact tightness spec a fastener must be set to. Wheel lug nuts have a torque spec, and getting it wrong in either direction is a genuine safety problem.
- Transmission fluid
- The fluid that lubricates the transmission and, in an automatic, transmits engine power through it. Neglected fluid is a leading cause of transmission failure, and a transmission is one of the most expensive things on the car. Follow your manual's interval and treat any lifetime-fill claim with suspicion. See what your car actually needs and when.
- TSB (technical service bulletin)
- A manufacturer's notice to its shops describing a known problem on specific vehicles and the approved fix. Unlike a recall, a TSB is not free unless you are under warranty. Still worth knowing about: pointing a shop at a relevant TSB can save hours of billed diagnosis.
- Tune-up
- A vague, outdated term. It once meant setting points, plugs, and ignition timing. Today it means whatever the shop decides it means, usually plugs, filters, and an inspection. Because the word has no fixed definition, always ask exactly which parts and services are included before approving one.
V
- VIN
- Vehicle identification number. The 17-character code unique to your car, visible through the windshield at the base of the dash and on the driver's door jamb. It encodes year, make, model, engine, and assembly plant. Shops use it to order parts that actually fit; you use it to check for open recalls.
W
- Water pump
- Circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. When it fails, the engine overheats fast. On many engines it is driven by the timing belt, so shops often replace both at once, which saves you paying the same labor twice.
- Wheel bearing
- Lets the wheel spin freely on the hub. A failing one makes a growl or hum that rises with speed and changes when you swerve gently side to side. Do not put this one off. A bearing that seizes at speed can lock up a wheel.

What should I ask when I don't understand a line on my estimate?
Ask two questions: what does this part do, and what happens if I wait? A shop that can answer both in plain English is a shop worth using. Vague answers or pressure to decide on the spot are the warning sign, not the price itself.Why do two shops use different words for the same repair?
