Dealer service prices the GM Genuine or ACDelco part at list, around $480 to $660 in RepairPal's parts figure, and bills labor near $170 to $200 per hour, so dealer and mobile-dealer-parts quotes land around $900 to $1,300 and YourMechanic shows dealer estimates up to $2,011 for the V6. The gap is mostly parts markup, since the identical GM Genuine unit sells online for $187 to $219.
Where these numbers come from
- Estimate ranges: a hand-verified research pass for this exact vehicle and repair, cross-referenced across 12 independent sources (parts retailers, labor guides, and published shop pricing), completed September 2026.
- Recall and complaint data: NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) records for the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado specifically, filtered to charging system relevance and refreshed daily from the federal API.
- Local prices: real, accepted quotes from verified Fixxr marketplace jobs, published per metro once five verified jobs of this type have closed. Never estimates dressed up as transactions.
Not included in the estimate: Diagnosis and charging-system test time (typically 0.5 to 1.0 hr billed separately), Serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys, commonly replaced at the same time since they are already off, Battery replacement or recharge if the failing alternator ran the battery down, Repairs to battery cables, grounds, or the LIN connector when wiring is the real fault, Taxes, shop supply fees, and the $34 to $78 core charge if the old unit is not returned.

Real owner report, verbatim from NHTSA:
“Truck bought in United States for use in US. All dash displays ( child or person in back seat or passenger seat, and gauges, emergency or vital messages, warnings etc) are in a foreign language. I only speak and read english. In addition, may go into mode where it changes channel and volume every few seconds which is distracting. Chevrolet dealer (Valmark) says they want 100-200 usd to diagnose and 2000.00 to replace. Reset did not fix. Vehicles for US should be in common language. Chevy should diagnose and repair free of charge. Screen is locked/frozen and cannot be accessed. Spoke with Ian at chevy hdqtrs who said diagnose fee is up to dealer, i will have to pay. Chevy forums say common problem and chevy won’t repair.”

The battery starts your 2018 Chevrolet Colorado; the alternator runs it. Once the engine is on, a belt spins the alternator and it generates the electricity for everything, headlights, computers, ignition, while recharging the battery for the next start. When the alternator quits, the car drains the battery and dies, which is why a bad alternator so often gets misdiagnosed as a bad battery.

Four signs it’s the alternator, not the battery
Battery light while driving
The charging system stopped keeping up. The battery is now running the car alone.
Lights dim at idle
Headlights or dash brighten with revs and dim at a stop. Classic weak-alternator output.
Whine or growl up front
A failing alternator bearing gets noisy before it dies. The pitch rises with engine speed.
Dead battery, again
A new battery that keeps dying was probably never being recharged. Test the alternator first.
The two-minute check: with the engine running, voltage at the battery should read roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Low 12s means the alternator is not charging. Most parts stores run this test free.
What an alternator replacement is like on the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado
The labor number depends heavily on which engine is under the hood. On the 3.6L V6 (RPO LGZ) the alternator hangs low on the block, so the job is a two-level operation: the intake duct comes off up top, the serpentine belt comes off with a 15mm on the tensioner, then the lower mounting bolts are reached from underneath after pulling the right front wheel and inner fender liner (or the skid plate on off-road trims). Owners on ColoradoFans report 1.5 to 3 hours in the driveway, and shops book it at roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The 2.5L four-cylinder has a much emptier engine bay and comes in noticeably cheaper; RepairPal quotes a 2018 2.5L LT at $447 to $547 total versus $658 to $851 for the model average.
The 2.8L Duramax diesel is the slow one. The charge-air-cooler tube has to be loosened and shifted over the fuse box, the engine cover and a foam sound block come out for bolt clearance, and the lower alternator bolt is so buried that the accepted forum method is going in through the wheel-well liner; some owners literally drill a half-inch access hole in the plastic to reach it. One documented DIY on ColoradoFans took about 2.5 hours to get the old unit out and 30 minutes to put the new one in. Because the belt, both idlers, and the tensioner are already exposed, diesel owners commonly replace them in the same visit, which is why real-world diesel invoices often run past this table.
Factory part numbers, all findable in the RockAuto catalog for this exact truck: the 2.5L uses a 150-amp unit, GM 13520817; the 3.6L uses a 150-amp unit, GM 84129223; the 2.8L diesel uses a 140-amp unit, ACDelco 84062199, superseded by GM 84169187. A quirk worth knowing: GM Genuine units sell online for $187 to $219, which is cheaper than several aftermarket remans. The quality aftermarket names that fit (Bosch, Remy, ACDelco reman, WAI, TYC, Duralast) run about $154 to $331 online, while the same class of part at a walk-in parts counter runs $300 to $400 plus a core deposit, and that counter price is what most independent shops bill from.
Known failure pattern on 2015-2018 Colorados: these alternators use an overrunning decoupler (clutch) pulley, and a rebuilder quoted on the forums says the clutch typically wears out around 100K miles. Reported failures cluster wide, from about 35K on early complaints to 130K on a ZR2 whose owner replaced the OEM unit with a Duralast. The other signature issue is the Service Battery Charging System message that is not the alternator at all: GM service info and forum diagnosis repeatedly trace it to a burned L-terminal (LIN control) connector at the alternator, chafed battery cables, loose main fuse-block studs, or corroded grounds. A shop that tests the cables and grounds before condemning the alternator can save you the entire job, so pay for the diagnosis; there is no recall covering the alternator on the 2018 Colorado.
Estimate note: these are researched independent-shop ranges, not a guaranteed quote. The only exact number is one from a shop that has seen your car.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 2018 Chevrolet Colorado alternator replacement cost?
A 2018 Chevrolet Colorado alternator replacement typically runs $305 to $770 at an independent shop, parts and labor included. The alternator itself is $170 to $400, labor makes up most of the rest, and the job takes 1 to 3 hours. Why does the price change with the engine?
The 2018 Chevrolet Colorado came with more than one engine, and they do not share the same part or the same access. A tighter engine bay or extra teardown adds labor hours, and the part price moves too. Sites that show one national number flatten that out. Pick your engine on the estimate above for a closer figure. How do I know if it's the alternator or the battery?
A battery that only cranks weakly on startup but runs fine afterward is usually the battery. A battery or charging warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle, or a car that dies while running points at the alternator. The clean test is voltage at the battery with the engine running: roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging, low 12s means it is not. Most parts stores will test both for free, so confirm before buying either part. Can I drive my Chevrolet with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs off the battery alone, and depending on its charge and what is switched on you may get 30 minutes to an hour before the Chevrolet dies, possibly in traffic. Turn off everything you can spare and drive straight to the shop, or have it towed if the warning light has been on a while. How long does an alternator last?
Most factory alternators last roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, or 7 to 12 years. Heat, short-trip driving, and heavy electrical loads shorten that. The usual failures are worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator, or a noisy bearing, and the fix is replacement rather than repair on nearly all modern units. Are there recalls on the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado?
Yes, NHTSA lists 1 recall for the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado. Recall repairs are done free of charge at a franchised dealer for that brand, so it is worth checking your VIN before paying a shop for related work.
