2018 Chevrolet Equinox alternator replacement: parts and labor

Labor runs $165 to $450 (the job takes 1 to 3 hours at typical independent-shop rates), and the alternator itself typically costs $220 to $520 for the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, plus $15 to $40 in shop supplies + charging system test. Prices updated September 2026.

EnginePartsLaborEstimated total
1.5L Turbo I4$250 to $460$165 to $375 (1.5 to 2.5 hrs)$430 to $875
2.0L Turbo I4$240 to $450$198 to $420 (1.8 to 2.8 hrs)$453 to $910
1.6L Diesel I4$220 to $520$220 to $450 (2.0 to 3.0 hrs)$455 to $1,010

Coverage note: None excluded. All three 2018 US engines (1.5L LYX, 2.0L LTG, 1.6L LH7 diesel) are covered; the 2018 Equinox had no hybrid or V6 variant. The diesel gets its own row because new-unit availability is thin and dealer sourcing genuinely moves its ceiling.

RepairPal ($755 to $1,009, with parts priced $548 to $705) and YourMechanic ($888 to $1,086 for the 2018 1.5L in some markets) both build their estimates on dealer list OEM parts pricing. Actual street price for a GM Genuine NEW alternator is $234 to $239 at RockAuto, so those guides overstate the parts line by $300+. A dealership install with list price ACDelco parts typically runs $850 to $1,100 on the gas engines.

Where these numbers come from

  • Estimate ranges: a hand-verified research pass for this exact vehicle and repair, cross-referenced across 10 independent sources (parts retailers, labor guides, and published shop pricing), completed September 2026.
  • Recall and complaint data: NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) records for the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox specifically, filtered to charging system relevance and refreshed daily from the federal API.
  • Local prices: real, accepted quotes from verified Fixxr marketplace jobs, published per metro once five verified jobs of this type have closed. Never estimates dressed up as transactions.

Not included in the estimate: Battery replacement (a failed alternator often kills the battery; add $180 to $280 if needed), Serpentine/accessory drive belt if replaced during the job ($25 to $40 part), Separate electrical diagnostic fee if the shop charges one ($90 to $160, often waived with the repair), Wiring, cable end, or fuse block repairs beyond the alternator itself, Taxes, environmental/shop fees beyond the supplies line, Dealer OEM premium (see note).

charging system owner complaints

Real owner report, verbatim from NHTSA:

About 3 weeks ago my battery completely died and I had to get 3 jump starts in one day. Upon replacing my battery I continued to experience a drained battery. Then my in-car wifi stopped working. I contacted onstar and they attempted to reset it which didn't work. So they escalated the issue to the highest department. I also had the battery and alternator tested and it showed that the battery and alternator were not the issue. It was decided that the problem was electrical. So I had all the electrical connections tested and it was determined that the issue was with the oem module.

How your charging system works

The battery starts your 2018 Chevrolet Equinox; the alternator runs it. Once the engine is on, a belt spins the alternator and it generates the electricity for everything, headlights, computers, ignition, while recharging the battery for the next start. When the alternator quits, the car drains the battery and dies, which is why a bad alternator so often gets misdiagnosed as a bad battery.

The belt spins the alternator, the alternator pushes current to the battery, and the fuse box feeds everything else. When the alternator stops charging, the battery drains and the car dies even though the battery itself may be fine.

Four signs it’s the alternator, not the battery

Battery light while driving

The charging system stopped keeping up. The battery is now running the car alone.

Lights dim at idle

Headlights or dash brighten with revs and dim at a stop. Classic weak-alternator output.

Whine or growl up front

A failing alternator bearing gets noisy before it dies. The pitch rises with engine speed.

Dead battery, again

A new battery that keeps dying was probably never being recharged. Test the alternator first.

The two-minute check: with the engine running, voltage at the battery should read roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Low 12s means the alternator is not charging. Most parts stores run this test free.

What an alternator replacement is like on the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox

The 2018 Equinox was the first year of the third generation and dropped the old 2.4L and V6 entirely, so every US truck runs one of three turbo fours: the 1.5L LYX, the 2.0L LTG, or the rare 1.6L LH7 diesel. The alternators do not interchange across engines. The 1.5L takes a 130 amp unit (GM 13535009), while both the 2.0L and the diesel take 150 amp units (GM 13535007 and 13535006). Verify amperage before ordering, because parts stores list all three on the same year page.

On the 1.5L the alternator mounts at the front of the block behind the AC plumbing. Owners on the Terrain and Equinox forums (same platform, same engine) report the unit comes out in about 30 minutes but reinstall takes closer to an hour, because one mounting bolt sits nearly against an AC line and you have to hold the alternator aligned from above while starting the bolts blind. That is why book time lands around 2 hours even though it looks like a simple top side job, and why RepairPal shows $207 to $304 of labor on this exact year.

Pricing quirk worth knowing: the 2.0L reman units are actually cheaper than the 1.5L versions at RockAuto ($200 to $206 for TerrePower, Remy, and Pure Energy 150 amp remans, versus $278 to $377 for the 1.5L equivalents), but the LTG bay is more crowded so labor eats the savings. Odder still, GM Genuine NEW alternators are among the cheapest options online, $233.99 for the 1.5L and $238.89 for the 2.0L, undercutting most remans. Ask your shop to price the OEM new unit before defaulting to a reman.

The 1.6L diesel is the wildcard. It was only offered in 2018 and 2019 with a tiny take rate, and it shows in parts supply: RockAuto lists a Pure Energy reman at just $119.79 plus a $46 core, but the new GM 13535006 and the WAI unit are both out of stock, and FVP is too. If a shop cannot get the reman, the fallback is a dealer ordered ACDelco unit, which is what pushes the diesel high end past $1,000. Same 150 amp spec as the 2.0L, but budget an extra day for sourcing.

RepairPal quotes $755 to $1,009 for this repair using a $548 to $705 parts line, and YourMechanic shows $888 to $1,086 for the 2018 1.5L in some metros. Those parts numbers are dealer list, not street price. With GM Genuine new units selling under $240 online, an independent shop sourcing its own quality part should land you meaningfully under those figures. One add on to expect: many shops replace the accessory drive belt while they are in there, roughly $25 to $40 in parts.

Estimate note: these are researched independent-shop ranges, not a guaranteed quote. The only exact number is one from a shop that has seen your car.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox alternator replacement cost?
A 2018 Chevrolet Equinox alternator replacement typically runs $430 to $1,010 at an independent shop, parts and labor included. The alternator itself is $220 to $520, labor makes up most of the rest, and the job takes 1 to 3 hours.
  • Why does the price change with the engine?
The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox came with more than one engine, and they do not share the same part or the same access. A tighter engine bay or extra teardown adds labor hours, and the part price moves too. Sites that show one national number flatten that out. Pick your engine on the estimate above for a closer figure.
  • How do I know if it's the alternator or the battery?
A battery that only cranks weakly on startup but runs fine afterward is usually the battery. A battery or charging warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle, or a car that dies while running points at the alternator. The clean test is voltage at the battery with the engine running: roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging, low 12s means it is not. Most parts stores will test both for free, so confirm before buying either part.
  • Can I drive my Chevrolet with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs off the battery alone, and depending on its charge and what is switched on you may get 30 minutes to an hour before the Chevrolet dies, possibly in traffic. Turn off everything you can spare and drive straight to the shop, or have it towed if the warning light has been on a while.
  • How long does an alternator last?
Most factory alternators last roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, or 7 to 12 years. Heat, short-trip driving, and heavy electrical loads shorten that. The usual failures are worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator, or a noisy bearing, and the fix is replacement rather than repair on nearly all modern units.
  • Are there recalls on the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox?
Yes, NHTSA lists 5 recalls for the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. Recall repairs are done free of charge at a franchised dealer for that brand, so it is worth checking your VIN before paying a shop for related work.
