2018 Chrysler Pacifica alternator replacement: parts and labor
Labor runs $198 to $390 (the job takes 1 to 3 hours at typical independent-shop rates), and the alternator itself typically costs $250 to $430 for the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica, plus $15 to $45 in coolant top-off and shop supplies. Prices updated September 2026.
| Engine | Parts | Labor | Estimated total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6L V6 | $250 to $430 | $198 to $390 (1.8 to 2.6 hrs) | $463 to $865 |
Coverage note: The Pacifica Hybrid plug-in is excluded because its eFlite hybrid transaxle and DC-DC converter handle all 12-volt charging, so it has no conventional belt-driven alternator to replace.
Genuine Mopar alternators list at $723 to $1,075 MSRP depending on amperage (about $476 to $719 from online Mopar discounters), which is why dealer invoices commonly land at $1,300 to $2,100 for this job versus the independent range. Nearly all of that gap is the part itself, since Bosch and WAI build equivalent-spec units for a third of Mopar list.
Where these numbers come from
- Estimate ranges: a hand-verified research pass for this exact vehicle and repair, cross-referenced across 11 independent sources (parts retailers, labor guides, and published shop pricing), completed September 2026.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FRONT UNDERHOOD
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2018 Jeep Renegade, Compass and Grand Cherokee, RAM 1500 and Promaster, Fiat 500x, Dodge Journey, Challenger, Charger and Durango and Chrysler 300x vehicles, 2017-2018 Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles and 2018-2019 Jeep Cherokee and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid vehicles. The powertrain control module may be equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail, causing a stall or a no start condition. A vehicle stall can increase the risk of a crash.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began October 2, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U87.
Real owner report, verbatim from NHTSA:
“My vehicle has developed an intermittent and potentially serious safety-related failure. When the Engine Stop/Start system automatically shuts the engine off at a red light or stop sign, the vehicle sometimes fails to restart. At the same time, the electronic gear selector becomes locked, preventing me from selecting Neutral or moving the vehicle out of the roadway. The vehicle is therefore effectively immobilized in traffic. The only recovery method I have found is to disconnect both the main and auxiliary batteries for approximately 10 minutes, reconnect them, and then restart the vehicle. The check-engine light also comes on when the failure occurs. Both the main and auxiliary batteries have already been replaced on August 3rd, 2026, so this is not simply a matter of replacing an old battery. I brought the vehicle to the dealer on August 14, 2026 for inspection. Because I had previously been forced to disconnect the batteries to recover the vehicle, no diagnostic trouble codes were available when the dealer performed its inspection. I understand why this makes diagnosis more difficult, but the absence of codes after the system has been reset does not eliminate the underlying intermittent failure. I am particularly concerned because Chrysler has issued service information addressing closely related problems on the 2018 Pacifica, including S2008000075, concerning no-start, Stop/Start inoperative and Service Shifter conditions, and PCM bulletin 18-001-19, which addresses 2018 Pacifica conditions involving engine restart performance, battery state-of-charge performance, improper powerdown, ECU performance, and TCM/shifter communication faults. My vehicle also previously received the Y65 Engine Stop/Start campaign in 2021. Now in persistent no-start condition remaining in the failed state and can't be reset. The instrument panel powers up, the check-engine light remains illuminated, the vehicle produces a click when the Start button is pressed.”

The battery starts your 2018 Chrysler Pacifica; the alternator runs it. Once the engine is on, a belt spins the alternator and it generates the electricity for everything, headlights, computers, ignition, while recharging the battery for the next start. When the alternator quits, the car drains the battery and dies, which is why a bad alternator so often gets misdiagnosed as a bad battery.

Four signs it’s the alternator, not the battery
Battery light while driving
The charging system stopped keeping up. The battery is now running the car alone.
Lights dim at idle
Headlights or dash brighten with revs and dim at a stop. Classic weak-alternator output.
Whine or growl up front
A failing alternator bearing gets noisy before it dies. The pitch rises with engine speed.
Dead battery, again
A new battery that keeps dying was probably never being recharged. Test the alternator first.
The two-minute check: with the engine running, voltage at the battery should read roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Low 12s means the alternator is not charging. Most parts stores run this test free.
What an alternator replacement is like on the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica
Every gas 2018 Pacifica runs the 3.6L Pentastar V6, but the alternator hangs low on the front of the transversely mounted engine in a genuinely tight pocket. The standard job means pulling the serpentine belt, disconnecting the upper radiator hose for clearance (which drains some coolant), and working mostly from underneath with the van in the air; some techs unbolt the A/C compressor, lines still attached, to make room. That access story is why a part you can hold in one hand books at roughly 2 to 2.6 hours instead of the 1-hour swap this job is on many sedans.
One van, three factory alternators. Chrysler fitted 160-amp (OE 56029731AA), 180-amp (56029732AB), and 220-amp (56029733AB) units depending on equipment, with the 220A common on higher trims carrying rear A/C, power doors, and heavy electrical loads. RockAuto lists quality aftermarket units in all three ratings (WAI, Bosch, Remy, TYC) from about $154 to $425, and the amperage must match the outgoing unit, so verify the rating stamped on the old alternator or run the VIN before ordering. Fitting a lower-amp unit on a loaded van is a classic cause of lingering charging complaints.
The engine stop-start (ESS) system works this charging system harder than a normal van. The most common early symptom owners report is not a dead battery but the stop-start feature quietly deactivating with a battery-saver or charging-system message, because the alternator can no longer recover the batteries fast enough between restarts. Gas Pacificas with ESS carry two batteries: the main under-hood battery plus an auxiliary battery buried under the front passenger footwell carpet, and a tired aux battery perfectly mimics a failing alternator. Any honest shop should test both batteries before condemning the alternator.
Before paying for anything, check recall completion. NHTSA recall 19V-348 covered roughly 198,700 2017-2019 Pacificas with ESS for a loose battery ground connection that causes intermittent loss of power steering assist and even loss of motive power, symptoms that look exactly like alternator failure. The fix is free at any Chrysler dealer. Pacifica forums are full of owners who replaced alternators chasing stalls and charging warnings that traced back to grounds, batteries, or software rather than the alternator itself.
On price, the headline estimates deserve a hard look. RepairPal shows $1,341 to $1,472 for this job, but about $1,060 of that is the part priced at Mopar list; the OEM 220A alternator carries an MSRP of $1,075 (56029733AB), with the 160A at $723. Quality aftermarket equivalents run $250 to $430, which is why an independent shop using a Bosch or WAI unit lands hundreds below the big-site estimates at identical labor. One forum owner quoted $800 by a dealer for a 220A unit bought the same-spec part aftermarket for roughly a third of that.
Estimate note: these are researched independent-shop ranges, not a guaranteed quote. The only exact number is one from a shop that has seen your car.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica alternator replacement cost?
A 2018 Chrysler Pacifica alternator replacement typically runs $463 to $865 at an independent shop, parts and labor included. The alternator itself is $250 to $430, labor makes up most of the rest, and the job takes 1 to 3 hours. Why does the price change with the engine?
The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica came with more than one engine, and they do not share the same part or the same access. A tighter engine bay or extra teardown adds labor hours, and the part price moves too. Sites that show one national number flatten that out. Pick your engine on the estimate above for a closer figure. How do I know if it's the alternator or the battery?
A battery that only cranks weakly on startup but runs fine afterward is usually the battery. A battery or charging warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle, or a car that dies while running points at the alternator. The clean test is voltage at the battery with the engine running: roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging, low 12s means it is not. Most parts stores will test both for free, so confirm before buying either part. Can I drive my Chrysler with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs off the battery alone, and depending on its charge and what is switched on you may get 30 minutes to an hour before the Chrysler dies, possibly in traffic. Turn off everything you can spare and drive straight to the shop, or have it towed if the warning light has been on a while. How long does an alternator last?
Most factory alternators last roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, or 7 to 12 years. Heat, short-trip driving, and heavy electrical loads shorten that. The usual failures are worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator, or a noisy bearing, and the fix is replacement rather than repair on nearly all modern units. Are there recalls on the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica?
Yes, NHTSA lists 12 recalls for the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica. Recall repairs are done free of charge at a franchised dealer for that brand, so it is worth checking your VIN before paying a shop for related work.
