EnginePartsLaborEstimated total
2.0L EcoBoost I4$220 to $380$255 to $480 (2.3 to 3.2 hrs)$495 to $925
3.5L Ti-VCT V6$200 to $360$200 to $360 (1.8 to 2.4 hrs)$420 to $785
2.7L EcoBoost V6 (Sport)$250 to $450$275 to $525 (2.5 to 3.5 hrs)$545 to $1,040

Coverage note: None excluded: all three factory 2018 powertrains (2.0L EcoBoost, 3.5L V6, 2.7L EcoBoost Sport) are in the table, and the 2018 Edge was never sold as a hybrid in the US.

Genuine Ford alternator assemblies for the 2018 Edge list at $598 to $707 MSRP (G2GZ/DG1Z-10346 family), and dealer labor at $160 to $220/hr pushes the same job to roughly $1,000 to $1,960, the range YourMechanic publishes for 2018 dealer pricing. The gap is almost entirely the OEM part markup plus dealer labor rate, not extra work.

Where these numbers come from

  • Estimate ranges: a hand-verified research pass for this exact vehicle and repair, cross-referenced across 13 independent sources (parts retailers, labor guides, and published shop pricing), completed September 2026.
  • Recall and complaint data: NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) records for the 2018 Ford Edge specifically, filtered to charging system relevance and refreshed daily from the federal API.
  • Local prices: real, accepted quotes from verified Fixxr marketplace jobs, published per metro once five verified jobs of this type have closed. Never estimates dressed up as transactions.

Not included in the estimate: Diagnosis time (typically 0.5 to 1.0 hr) to confirm the alternator vs battery, BMS, or cable faults, AGM battery replacement, commonly needed after a failed alternator has deep-cycled it (about $200 to $280), Belt tensioner, idler pulleys, or the 2.7L decoupler pulley if worn, Battery cable or B+ terminal repairs (the known loose-cable failure point on this year), Taxes, shop fees, and towing if the car died on the road.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX, 2019 Ford Flex, and Lincoln MKT vehicles. The power supply cables at the starter and the alternator may not have been properly secured, possibly resulting in an electrical arc. An electrical arc can increase the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the alternator and starter motor power supply cables to verify that they are properly secured, correcting them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began September 26, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S25.

Real owner report, verbatim from NHTSA:

Now have had my battery replaced twice for some weird reason my car keeps dying when nothing appears to to have been left on inside the vehicle. My Ford edge titanium 2018 has the settings that shit down the wngine with a 30 second shut down and same with anything left in it shuts it off. So why is my car constantly dying with a new battery is my vehicle pat if the 80 something Ford edges that has connection issues with the alternator etc. please help with already two recalls that my vehicle has but can’t be replaced due to parts not ready for repairs by ford. Help!!!

Get the failure confirmed with a real diagnosis before you approve the repair, so you fix the part that actually failed.

Recall fixes are free at the dealer. Everything else deserves a fair price.

How your charging system works

The battery starts your 2018 Ford Edge; the alternator runs it. Once the engine is on, a belt spins the alternator and it generates the electricity for everything, headlights, computers, ignition, while recharging the battery for the next start. When the alternator quits, the car drains the battery and dies, which is why a bad alternator so often gets misdiagnosed as a bad battery.

Diagram of a car charging system showing the belt-driven alternator on the engine sending current through the charging cable to the battery, which feeds the fuse box and the vehicle's electronics, for the 2018 Ford Edge alternator
The belt spins the alternator, the alternator pushes current to the battery, and the fuse box feeds everything else. When the alternator stops charging, the battery drains and the car dies even though the battery itself may be fine.

Four signs it’s the alternator, not the battery

Battery light while driving

The charging system stopped keeping up. The battery is now running the car alone.

Lights dim at idle

Headlights or dash brighten with revs and dim at a stop. Classic weak-alternator output.

Whine or growl up front

A failing alternator bearing gets noisy before it dies. The pitch rises with engine speed.

Dead battery, again

A new battery that keeps dying was probably never being recharged. Test the alternator first.

The two-minute check: with the engine running, voltage at the battery should read roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Low 12s means the alternator is not charging. Most parts stores run this test free.

What an alternator replacement is like on the 2018 Ford Edge

The labor number on this generation Edge is an access story, not a bolt count. The alternator sits low on the front of the transverse engine, and the correct service path is from underneath: vehicle up in the air, right front wheel and splash shield out of the way, then the unit comes out the bottom. On the 2.0L EcoBoost the lower accessory belt is a single-use stretch belt, so the job requires a stretch-belt installer (the Lisle 59370 is the tool forum members name) and a fresh belt every time. A Ford Edge Forum owner who tried to pull a 2.0L alternator out the top of the engine bay spent 16 hours before learning the bottom route from the factory workshop manual pages; that is why independent shops book this at 2.3 to 3.2 hours instead of the 1.5 hours the same part takes in a longitudinal F-150.

Amperage matters when ordering. The 2018 Edge came with either a 175 amp or a 200 amp generator depending on options; heavily equipped cars (heated and cooled seats, towing) carry the 200 amp unit, and the two do not cross. OE part numbers by engine: 2.0L EcoBoost used G2GZ-10346-C (175A, superseded to G2GZ-10346-J) or DG1Z-10346-D (200A, superseded to G2GZ-10346-H); the 3.5L V6 used G2GZ-10346-E (200A) or G2GZ-10346-F (175A); the 2.7L EcoBoost Sport used F2GZ-10346-B, sold in the Motorcraft box as GL-8782, which carries a one-way clutch decoupler pulley (Motorcraft GP-770). Many remanufactured units ship without that pulley, so the quote should confirm whether the pulley transfers or gets replaced.

This exact model year has a recall touching this exact repair: Ford safety recall 18S25 (NHTSA 18V-548, August 2018) covered 2018 Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles built at Oakville on May 29, 2018 for alternator and starter B+ cable nuts that were not properly torqued, a condition that can throw P0562 (system voltage low) and in the worst case cause an electrical surge or fire. The affected batch is tiny (about 87 US vehicles), but any 2018 Edge with intermittent charging-system warnings deserves a free VIN recall check before anyone pays for parts. CarComplaints logs for the 2018 Edge also show a cluster of battery-drain and 'charging system service now' complaints between roughly 13,000 and 56,000 miles, several of which burned through multiple batteries before the alternator or a loose power cable was identified.

The battery side of the system complicates diagnosis. The 2018 Edge runs a Battery Monitoring System (BMS) calibrated for its AGM battery, and after an alternator or battery swap the BMS needs a reset or the truck can keep flagging charging faults and load-shedding accessories even with a healthy new unit installed. Weak or wrong-type flooded replacement batteries also drag charging voltage around and can mimic alternator failure. A shop that quotes the alternator without first load-testing the AGM battery and checking BMS data is guessing; budget for the possibility that the real fix is a battery, a cable end, or both.

On price, the published estimator numbers run high because they assume near-OEM parts. RepairPal prices the 2017-2018 Edge job at $862 to $994 using a $640 to $747 part, and YourMechanic shows a 2018 3.5L dealer range of $1,416 to $1,960. The genuine Ford assemblies list at $598 to $707 MSRP (about $360 to $435 from online OEM parts counters), which is where those totals come from. Quality aftermarket units for this platform (Duralast at $324.99 at AutoZone, TYC around $199, Advance Auto Parts stocking $347 to $500 premium lines) cut the parts bill roughly in half, and the dealer claim sometimes repeated to Edge owners that an aftermarket alternator 'will not work with the BMS' is not accurate; a correct-amperage, correct-pulley unit works fine once the BMS reset is performed.

Estimate note: these are researched independent-shop ranges, not a guaranteed quote. The only exact number is one from a shop that has seen your car.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does a 2018 Ford Edge alternator replacement cost?
A 2018 Ford Edge alternator replacement typically runs $420 to $1,040 at an independent shop, parts and labor included. The alternator itself is $200 to $450, labor makes up most of the rest, and the job takes 1 to 3 hours.
  • Why does the price change with the engine?
The 2018 Ford Edge came with more than one engine, and they do not share the same part or the same access. A tighter engine bay or extra teardown adds labor hours, and the part price moves too. Sites that show one national number flatten that out. Pick your engine on the estimate above for a closer figure.
  • How do I know if it's the alternator or the battery?
A battery that only cranks weakly on startup but runs fine afterward is usually the battery. A battery or charging warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle, or a car that dies while running points at the alternator. The clean test is voltage at the battery with the engine running: roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging, low 12s means it is not. Most parts stores will test both for free, so confirm before buying either part.
  • Can I drive my Ford with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs off the battery alone, and depending on its charge and what is switched on you may get 30 minutes to an hour before the Ford dies, possibly in traffic. Turn off everything you can spare and drive straight to the shop, or have it towed if the warning light has been on a while.
  • How long does an alternator last?
Most factory alternators last roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, or 7 to 12 years. Heat, short-trip driving, and heavy electrical loads shorten that. The usual failures are worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator, or a noisy bearing, and the fix is replacement rather than repair on nearly all modern units.
  • Are there recalls on the 2018 Ford Edge?
Yes, NHTSA lists 7 recalls for the 2018 Ford Edge. Recall repairs are done free of charge at a franchised dealer for that brand, so it is worth checking your VIN before paying a shop for related work.

You deserve a fair fix.
