2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee alternator replacement: parts and labor

Labor runs $145 to $365 (the job takes 1 to 3 hours at typical independent-shop rates), and the alternator itself typically costs $230 to $480 for the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, plus $15 to $40 in shop supplies, belt/terminal service. Prices updated September 2026.

EnginePartsLaborEstimated total
3.6L V6$230 to $450$145 to $330 (1.3 to 2.0 hrs)$390 to $820
5.7L V8$240 to $480$165 to $365 (1.5 to 2.2 hrs)$420 to $885

Coverage note: 6.4L SRT and 6.2L supercharged Trackhawk are excluded: performance-model charging hardware and SRT shop upcharges would inflate the top of the range. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 is also excluded: it returned for 2018 only in limited numbers after the emissions-suit pause, and its diesel-specific alternator lists at $672 (OEM discount price), which would distort the parts spread.

RepairPal's 2018-specific estimate of $1,272 to $1,329 assumes a new Mopar alternator priced near list (about $1,150 in parts alone), while quality Bosch, Denso, or Mopar reman units run $200 to $330 retail. Genuine Mopar new units for this Jeep carry $827 to $853 MSRPs (discounted online to $544 to $565), so insisting on OEM new at a dealer adds roughly $400 to $700 over the ranges above. YourMechanic's $343 all-years Grand Cherokee average is dragged down by 1990s models; their quotes for this generation run $600 to $900, and AutoNation Mobile's real-quote range of $375 to $1,100 brackets the independent-shop math here.

Where these numbers come from

  • Estimate ranges: a hand-verified research pass for this exact vehicle and repair, cross-referenced across 12 independent sources (parts retailers, labor guides, and published shop pricing), completed September 2026.
  • Recall and complaint data: NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) records for the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee specifically, filtered to charging system relevance and refreshed daily from the federal API.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FRONT UNDERHOOD

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2018 Jeep Renegade, Compass and Grand Cherokee, RAM 1500 and Promaster, Fiat 500x, Dodge Journey, Challenger, Charger and Durango and Chrysler 300x vehicles, 2017-2018 Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles and 2018-2019 Jeep Cherokee and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid vehicles. The powertrain control module may be equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail, causing a stall or a no start condition. A vehicle stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began October 2, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U87.

Real owner report, verbatim from NHTSA:

The Jeep was giving me a warning sign. It said stop slowly. Your jeep will shut off so I replaced the two batteries. As my Mechanic told me I replaced the alternator. I also replaced the ground wires. Nothing is making my jeep start. We ran the codes on the jeep and it came back as a U0100 code with the PCM system. No connection error. we looked up the recall information and a recall popped up for this 2018 jeep Grand Cherokee. I am being told that I am not affected by this recall.. the jeep was giving warning Saenz before I replaced the battery and alternator. After that. It did not give warning Saenz Anymore. It’s just completely Shut Off With no warning. Leaving me on the side of the road stranded twice. It will not start and it is reading these codes.

How your charging system works

The battery starts your 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee; the alternator runs it. Once the engine is on, a belt spins the alternator and it generates the electricity for everything, headlights, computers, ignition, while recharging the battery for the next start. When the alternator quits, the car drains the battery and dies, which is why a bad alternator so often gets misdiagnosed as a bad battery.

The belt spins the alternator, the alternator pushes current to the battery, and the fuse box feeds everything else. When the alternator stops charging, the battery drains and the car dies even though the battery itself may be fine.

Four signs it’s the alternator, not the battery

Battery light while driving

The charging system stopped keeping up. The battery is now running the car alone.

Lights dim at idle

Headlights or dash brighten with revs and dim at a stop. Classic weak-alternator output.

Whine or growl up front

A failing alternator bearing gets noisy before it dies. The pitch rises with engine speed.

Dead battery, again

A new battery that keeps dying was probably never being recharged. Test the alternator first.

The two-minute check: with the engine running, voltage at the battery should read roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Low 12s means the alternator is not charging. Most parts stores run this test free.

What an alternator replacement is like on the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

On the 3.6L Pentastar in the WK2 Grand Cherokee the alternator hangs on the front accessory drive and comes out from the top: pop the engine appearance cover, swing the tensioner with a breaker bar, pull the serpentine belt, then the 15mm and 16mm mounting bolts and the B+ cable. The catch on this body is the battery, which lives under the front passenger seat, so disconnecting power means pulling the seat-base access panel, not just popping the hood. Flat-rate book time is about 1.3 hours; real independent tickets land at 1.5 to 2.0.

The 5.7L HEMI job costs a little more purely in labor. You pop the top radiator shroud clips and grille trim, pull the airbox lid and intake tube, then swing the tensioner with a 3/8 breaker bar. The unit unbolts easily, but getting it OUT of the bay is the fight: WK2 owners report having to rotate and tilt it past the fan shroud, and some pull the shroud entirely, which is what pushes HEMI tickets toward 2.2 hours.

Match the amp rating before quoting. The 2018 shipped with 160, 180, or 220 amp alternators depending on equipment, and the tow and heavy-duty electrical packages carry the 220. RockAuto stocks all three ratings for the 3.6L: Bosch reman AL6490X 180A at $202.79, Denso reman at $257.79, new WAI at $244.89, and Mopar reman R6029789AA at $329.79, with core charges of $29 to $100 that go away when the shop returns your old unit.

The 2011 to 2014 WK2s with this same 3.6L were recalled for alternator diode failure that could stall the vehicle without warning. The 2018 was never part of that recall, but the symptom script on this generation is identical: a whine through the speakers, a sudden wall of dash warning lights, then a no-crank because the underseat battery drained silently. If the battery is more than 4 years old, have it load tested during the swap; a weak underseat battery is what cooks fresh alternators on these.

RepairPal's $1,272 to $1,329 figure for this exact year and model is not what an independent shop charges. It prices the part near the Mopar list of roughly $1,150 installed. MoparPartsGiant sells the genuine 5.7L unit (part 4801833AB) for $543.88 against an $827 MSRP and the 3.6L unit (4801779AG) for $564.78 against $853, so even a genuine-Mopar job at an independent should land hundreds of dollars below the RepairPal number.

Estimate note: these are researched independent-shop ranges, not a guaranteed quote. The only exact number is one from a shop that has seen your car.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee alternator replacement cost?
A 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee alternator replacement typically runs $390 to $885 at an independent shop, parts and labor included. The alternator itself is $230 to $480, labor makes up most of the rest, and the job takes 1 to 3 hours.
  • Why does the price change with the engine?
The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee came with more than one engine, and they do not share the same part or the same access. A tighter engine bay or extra teardown adds labor hours, and the part price moves too. Sites that show one national number flatten that out. Pick your engine on the estimate above for a closer figure.
  • How do I know if it's the alternator or the battery?
A battery that only cranks weakly on startup but runs fine afterward is usually the battery. A battery or charging warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle, or a car that dies while running points at the alternator. The clean test is voltage at the battery with the engine running: roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging, low 12s means it is not. Most parts stores will test both for free, so confirm before buying either part.
  • Can I drive my Jeep with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs off the battery alone, and depending on its charge and what is switched on you may get 30 minutes to an hour before the Jeep dies, possibly in traffic. Turn off everything you can spare and drive straight to the shop, or have it towed if the warning light has been on a while.
  • How long does an alternator last?
Most factory alternators last roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, or 7 to 12 years. Heat, short-trip driving, and heavy electrical loads shorten that. The usual failures are worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator, or a noisy bearing, and the fix is replacement rather than repair on nearly all modern units.
  • Are there recalls on the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Yes, NHTSA lists 11 recalls for the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Recall repairs are done free of charge at a franchised dealer for that brand, so it is worth checking your VIN before paying a shop for related work.
