2018 Jeep Wrangler alternator replacement: parts and labor
Labor runs $90 to $300 (the job takes 1 to 3 hours at typical independent-shop rates), and the alternator itself typically costs $150 to $340 for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, plus $10 to $35 in shop supplies, terminal cleaning, retest. Prices updated September 2026.
| Engine | Parts | Labor | Estimated total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6L V6 | $150 to $340 | $90 to $300 (0.8 to 2.0 hrs) | $250 to $675 |
Coverage note: 2018 Wrangler JL 2.0L turbo eTorque (late 2018 availability): it has no conventional alternator; charging comes from a 48 volt belt starter generator (MGU) with its own lithium battery and cooling loop, and BSG replacement is a different, much more expensive repair. Also excluded: aftermarket high output upgrade alternators (250 to 350 amp), which are electrical builds, not repairs.
RepairPal's 2018 Wrangler estimate ($851 to $1,113, with parts alone at $668 to $845) and its JK estimate ($556 to $1,510) are priced around the Mopar part, which lists at $472.79 to $882.79 new at RockAuto, and YourMechanic's generic Wrangler figure averages only $276 because it leans on old 4.0L era pricing. A real dealer quote for a 2018 JL was roughly $950 to $1,500 (about $500 part, 2 hours at $225 per hour). An independent shop installing a quality new or reman aftermarket unit ($120 to $310 at RockAuto/AutoZone) cuts $300 to $800 off those numbers.
Where these numbers come from
- Estimate ranges: a hand-verified research pass for this exact vehicle and repair, cross-referenced across 12 independent sources (parts retailers, labor guides, and published shop pricing), completed September 2026.
- Recall and complaint data: NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) records for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler specifically, filtered to charging system relevance and refreshed daily from the federal API.
- Local prices: real, accepted quotes from verified Fixxr marketplace jobs, published per metro once five verified jobs of this type have closed. Never estimates dressed up as transactions.
Not included in the estimate: Battery replacement (the 2018 JL has a main plus auxiliary ESS battery; a dead pair adds $250 to $450 and is often misdiagnosed as the alternator), Serpentine belt ($25 to $60 part; smart to do at the same time since the JK procedure already unbolts the alternator for belt access), Separate diagnostic or charging system test fee ($75 to $150) if you decline the repair, OEM Mopar alternator premium (adds roughly $300 to $700 over quality aftermarket, see note), High output or overlanding upgrade alternators (250 to 350 amp winch/lighting builds, $350 and up for the part alone), Taxes and shop fees beyond basic supplies.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FRONT UNDERHOOD
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2018 Jeep Renegade, Compass and Grand Cherokee, RAM 1500 and Promaster, Fiat 500x, Dodge Journey, Challenger, Charger and Durango and Chrysler 300x vehicles, 2017-2018 Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles and 2018-2019 Jeep Cherokee and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid vehicles. The powertrain control module may be equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail, causing a stall or a no start condition. A vehicle stall can increase the risk of a crash.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began October 2, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U87.
Real owner report, verbatim from NHTSA:
“The instrument cluster display in my 2018 Jeep Wrangler Sahara has failed. The display is either blank or nonfunctional, preventing me from viewing critical vehicle information and safety warnings while driving. This failure affects my ability to monitor engine temperature, fuel tank capacity, warning messages, fault indicators, and other important vehicle operating information. As a result, I may not be alerted to potentially dangerous conditions such as engine overheating, low oil pressure, charging system failures, or other safety-related issues. I am aware that Jeep has issued recalls involving instrument cluster defects on certain Wrangler vehicles, but my VIN is not included in the recall. The symptoms of my vehicle appear similar to those reported in recalled vehicles. Because the instrument cluster is a primary safety component used to communicate vehicle warnings and operating conditions to the driver, I believe this defect presents a safety risk. I am submitting this complaint so the issue can be investigated and to determine whether additional vehicles should be covered.”

The battery starts your 2018 Jeep Wrangler; the alternator runs it. Once the engine is on, a belt spins the alternator and it generates the electricity for everything, headlights, computers, ignition, while recharging the battery for the next start. When the alternator quits, the car drains the battery and dies, which is why a bad alternator so often gets misdiagnosed as a bad battery.

Four signs it’s the alternator, not the battery
Battery light while driving
The charging system stopped keeping up. The battery is now running the car alone.
Lights dim at idle
Headlights or dash brighten with revs and dim at a stop. Classic weak-alternator output.
Whine or growl up front
A failing alternator bearing gets noisy before it dies. The pitch rises with engine speed.
Dead battery, again
A new battery that keeps dying was probably never being recharged. Test the alternator first.
The two-minute check: with the engine running, voltage at the battery should read roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Low 12s means the alternator is not charging. Most parts stores run this test free.
What an alternator replacement is like on the 2018 Jeep Wrangler
2018 is the only model year Jeep sold two different Wranglers at the same time: the carryover JK and the all-new JL, both with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 but with alternators that do not interchange. The JK uses a 160 amp Denso style unit (Mopar 68078950AA), while the 2018 JL came with 180, 220, or 240 amp units (Mopar 56029597AB, 56029765AA, and 56029803AA). Parts sites list them separately as "Wrangler JK" and "Wrangler" for 2018, so confirm which body you have from the VIN or title before ordering. The amperage is printed on the alternator case sticker; matching it matters on the JL because the body computer expects the original output.
The labor spread in the range above is really a JK versus JL split. On the JK 3.6L the alternator sits right on top at the front of the engine, so accessible that the factory serpentine belt procedure has you unbolt the alternator (four bolts) just for belt clearance. Owners on wranglerforum report the whole swap taking about 40 minutes with hand tools, and RepairPal's JK specific estimator shows labor of only $61 to $90, well under one book hour. Expect the low end of the range, roughly $250 to $400 all in, for a JK at an independent shop.
The 2018 JL runs closer to 1.5 to 2.0 book hours because the intake duct and the stop-start (ESS) hardware crowd the front of the engine, and shops retest the dual battery charging system afterward. One JL owner on jlwranglerforums was quoted about 2 hours at $225 per hour plus roughly $500 for the part at a dealer, a $950 to $1,500 job, which is why a JL lands in the upper half of this range even at an independent charging $110 to $165 per hour.
Parts pricing is where you control this bill. For the JK 160 amp unit, RockAuto lists a new TYC at $119.79, new SKP at $147.79, Bosch reman at $178.79, and Denso reman at $279.79, against $882.79 for the new Mopar. AutoZone's Duralast Gold reman 160 amp runs $279.99 plus a $40 core, so a store brand reman can actually cost more than a new aftermarket unit shipped. For the JL, quality aftermarket 180 to 240 amp units run $209.79 (WAI 180A new) to about $310 (Remy or TerrePower reman 220/240A). Do not pay the 240 amp premium unless your Jeep originally had the high output unit.
Failure pattern to know: 2018 JL alternators have documented early deaths, including a 2018 JLU Sport S that lost its alternator at 41,000 miles on jlwranglerforums, usually announced by a whine or grinding from the front of the engine, flickering lights, and a battery warning. On the JL specifically, a weak charging system often first shows up as ESS or auxiliary battery messages, and owners commonly replace both batteries before finding the alternator was the real culprit, so have the charging system load tested before buying parts. JK units more typically make it past 100,000 miles; the early Pentastar alternator complaints were mostly 2012 to 2013 JKs, not 2018s.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a 2018 Jeep Wrangler alternator replacement cost?
A 2018 Jeep Wrangler alternator replacement typically runs $250 to $675 at an independent shop, parts and labor included. The alternator itself is $150 to $340, labor makes up most of the rest, and the job takes 1 to 3 hours. Why does the price change with the engine?
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler came with more than one engine, and they do not share the same part or the same access. A tighter engine bay or extra teardown adds labor hours, and the part price moves too. Sites that show one national number flatten that out. Pick your engine on the estimate above for a closer figure. How do I know if it's the alternator or the battery?
A battery that only cranks weakly on startup but runs fine afterward is usually the battery. A battery or charging warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle, or a car that dies while running points at the alternator. The clean test is voltage at the battery with the engine running: roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging, low 12s means it is not. Most parts stores will test both for free, so confirm before buying either part. Can I drive my Jeep with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs off the battery alone, and depending on its charge and what is switched on you may get 30 minutes to an hour before the Jeep dies, possibly in traffic. Turn off everything you can spare and drive straight to the shop, or have it towed if the warning light has been on a while. How long does an alternator last?
Most factory alternators last roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, or 7 to 12 years. Heat, short-trip driving, and heavy electrical loads shorten that. The usual failures are worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator, or a noisy bearing, and the fix is replacement rather than repair on nearly all modern units. Are there recalls on the 2018 Jeep Wrangler?
Yes, NHTSA lists 14 recalls for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. Recall repairs are done free of charge at a franchised dealer for that brand, so it is worth checking your VIN before paying a shop for related work.
