2018 Toyota Highlander alternator replacement: parts and labor
Labor runs $180 to $660 (the job takes 1 to 3 hours at typical independent-shop rates), and the alternator itself typically costs $220 to $450 for the 2018 Toyota Highlander, plus $15 to $40 in shop supplies + terminal service. Prices updated September 2026.
| Engine | Parts | Labor | Estimated total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.7L I4 | $220 to $380 | $180 to $415 (1.5 to 2.5 hrs) | $415 to $835 |
| 3.5L V6 | $260 to $450 | $300 to $660 (2.5 to 4.0 hrs) | $575 to $1,150 |
Coverage note: Highlander Hybrid (LE/XLE/Limited hybrid trims, 3.5L 2GR-FXS): excluded because it has no belt driven alternator at all; the 12V battery charges through the hybrid inverter's DC-DC converter, so this repair does not exist on those trims and any 'hybrid alternator' quote is misdiagnosis.
RepairPal's 2018 Highlander estimate ($1,055 to $1,280) and YourMechanic's 2019 V6 example ($1,211.71) run above this range because both build the parts line from OEM list pricing (the 180 amp 27060-0P420 lists at $663.17) plus metro labor rates. A Toyota dealer installing a new OEM unit will realistically land at $1,100 to $1,400. An independent using the same OEM part bought at online discount ($444.54) typically comes in $150 to $250 under the dealer, and the quality reman path saves another $100 to $200.
Where these numbers come from
- Estimate ranges: a hand-verified research pass for this exact vehicle and repair, cross-referenced across 12 independent sources (parts retailers, labor guides, and published shop pricing), completed September 2026.
- Recall and complaint data: NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) records for the 2018 Toyota Highlander specifically, filtered to charging system relevance and refreshed daily from the federal API.
- Local prices: real, accepted quotes from verified Fixxr marketplace jobs, published per metro once five verified jobs of this type have closed. Never estimates dressed up as transactions.
Not included in the estimate: Serpentine belt if replaced while everything is apart ($25 to $60 part, minimal added labor), New battery if the failing alternator ran it dead repeatedly, Charging system diagnostic fee ($100 to $160) when a shop does not roll it into the repair, Front radar recalibration if the shop takes the grille off route on Toyota Safety Sense P cars, $40 core charge if the old alternator is not returned, Taxes and percentage based shop fees beyond the listed consumables.

Real owner report, verbatim from NHTSA:
“Car is not properly wired to tow a trailer equipped with electric brakes. Toyota advertises the Highlander as having 5000 lb towing capacity. On the other hand, trailers weighing 3000 lb or more are required by law to be equipped with trailers brakes in most states. However, the Highlander's towing wire harness does not include the necessary wiring and 7-pin connector to power trailer brakes. Highlander OEM wiring harness only includes a 4-pin connector (which does not have output for a car-mounted brake controller nor 12V output to charge trailer's breakaway battery or power a trailer-mounted brake controller). Toyota's claim that the Highlander is capable of towing 5000 lb, but not equipping the car with essential safety equipment to do so is an unsafe condition (and false advertising). It could lead the car owners / operators to believe that it is acceptable to tow a 3000 lb or more trailer with the Highlander using the OEM 4-pin connector only, creating a serious safety hazard to themselves and other road users. Toyota should either equip the Highlander with proper wiring harness and 7-pin connector that allows the use of an on-board brake controller, or withdraw the towing capacity claim.”

The battery starts your 2018 Toyota Highlander; the alternator runs it. Once the engine is on, a belt spins the alternator and it generates the electricity for everything, headlights, computers, ignition, while recharging the battery for the next start. When the alternator quits, the car drains the battery and dies, which is why a bad alternator so often gets misdiagnosed as a bad battery.

Four signs it’s the alternator, not the battery
Battery light while driving
The charging system stopped keeping up. The battery is now running the car alone.
Lights dim at idle
Headlights or dash brighten with revs and dim at a stop. Classic weak-alternator output.
Whine or growl up front
A failing alternator bearing gets noisy before it dies. The pitch rises with engine speed.
Dead battery, again
A new battery that keeps dying was probably never being recharged. Test the alternator first.
The two-minute check: with the engine running, voltage at the battery should read roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Low 12s means the alternator is not charging. Most parts stores run this test free.
What an alternator replacement is like on the 2018 Toyota Highlander
On the 2014 to 2019 third generation Highlander the alternator hangs low on the radiator side of the engine, and the cooling fan assembly blocks its exit path. The standard independent shop move is to pull the engine cover and intake tube, unbolt the four 10mm fasteners on the fan assembly, and tilt it toward the passenger side to snake the unit out the top. Some shops instead quote the full front teardown: one owner on ToyotaNation with this same body style was quoted 5.5 hours including grille removal, radar sensor R&R, and radar recalibration. On a 2018 with Toyota Safety Sense P that is the worst case path, and it is why quotes on this truck can range from about 2.5 hours to over 5 for the identical repair. The 2.5 to 4.0 spread in the V6 row covers the fan tilt method through a cautious shop; FWD versus AWD makes no meaningful difference on this job.
The 2018 Highlander takes one of two OEM alternators: 27060-0V080 (12V 150 amp, $366.82 discounted at ToyotaPartsDeal against a $547.23 list) or the high output 27060-0P420 (12V 180 amp, $444.54 against $663.17 list). The 0P420 crosses to Denso 104211-0971 and is shared with the 2017 to 2020 Sienna. On the aftermarket side, AutoZone's Duralast remanufactured #11889 (180 amp) prices at $338.99 plus a $40 refundable core for the 2018, and Advance Auto Parts lists 2018 Highlander alternators from $215.99 to $361.58. Match the amp rating stamped on the old unit's tag before ordering, because both ratings appear on 2018s.
The remanufactured channel is thin for this specific engine. Denso's own First Time Fit reman line (210-1128 family) covers the 2008 to 2016 Highlander 2GR-FE, but the 2017 to 2019 2GR-FKS direct injection V6 is mostly served by new units: AISIN aftermarket ALTT-00676, RAREELECTRICAL OEM grade new at about $373.70 at Walmart, and budget Amazon brands (OEG, SHOWSEN, A-Premium) at roughly $130 to $250. This estimate prices the Duralast, Carquest, and OEM tier rather than the budget tier, because the 2017+ V6 runs Toyota's standard engine stop and start system, which cycles the charging system harder and punishes cut rate diodes.
RepairPal's 2018 specific estimate of $1,055 to $1,280 puts the parts line alone at $616 to $636, which is OEM list territory, and YourMechanic shows a $1,211.71 example on the 2019 V6. With a $339 Duralast reman in hand at an independent posting $120 to $165 per hour, real world totals cluster around $650 to $950 for the V6, which matches the roughly $1,250 owner reports that included a belt and the heavier teardown. If a quote lands well above $1,200, ask whether it assumes the grille off radar route or an OEM new part; either one is often optional.
Only the base LE with front wheel drive carried the 2.7L 1AR-FE four cylinder and its 6 speed automatic in 2018; every other trim is the V6. The four leaves more open real estate in the engine bay and its alternator comes out without fighting the fan shroud the same way, so it books roughly an hour less labor and its 150 amp part is the cheaper of the two OEM numbers. If you are quoted V6 money on a 4 cylinder LE, the shop priced the wrong engine.
Estimate note: these are researched independent-shop ranges, not a guaranteed quote. The only exact number is one from a shop that has seen your car.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 2018 Toyota Highlander alternator replacement cost?
A 2018 Toyota Highlander alternator replacement typically runs $415 to $1,150 at an independent shop, parts and labor included. The alternator itself is $220 to $450, labor makes up most of the rest, and the job takes 1 to 3 hours. Why does the price change with the engine?
The 2018 Toyota Highlander came with more than one engine, and they do not share the same part or the same access. A tighter engine bay or extra teardown adds labor hours, and the part price moves too. Sites that show one national number flatten that out. Pick your engine on the estimate above for a closer figure. How do I know if it's the alternator or the battery?
A battery that only cranks weakly on startup but runs fine afterward is usually the battery. A battery or charging warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle, or a car that dies while running points at the alternator. The clean test is voltage at the battery with the engine running: roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging, low 12s means it is not. Most parts stores will test both for free, so confirm before buying either part. Can I drive my Toyota with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs off the battery alone, and depending on its charge and what is switched on you may get 30 minutes to an hour before the Toyota dies, possibly in traffic. Turn off everything you can spare and drive straight to the shop, or have it towed if the warning light has been on a while. How long does an alternator last?
Most factory alternators last roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, or 7 to 12 years. Heat, short-trip driving, and heavy electrical loads shorten that. The usual failures are worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator, or a noisy bearing, and the fix is replacement rather than repair on nearly all modern units. Are there recalls on the 2018 Toyota Highlander?
Yes, NHTSA lists 5 recalls for the 2018 Toyota Highlander. Recall repairs are done free of charge at a franchised dealer for that brand, so it is worth checking your VIN before paying a shop for related work.
