Treat this as drive-it-only-if-you-must: the crank and cam are out of sync, and continuing to drive can turn a timing problem into bent valves or serious engine damage, so get it diagnosed right away.

The computer watches the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors together, and their relationship has to stay within a tight window because it tells the engine exactly when each valve opens against each piston. P0016 means those two signals no longer line up on bank 1. That is a genuine mechanical or timing concern, not a nuisance light: on an interference engine, timing that slips far enough can let a valve meet a piston. This code deserves to be taken seriously rather than cleared and ignored.

The most likely causes, roughly in order, are a stretched timing chain or a worn chain guide or tensioner that has let the cam timing drift (a serious and common cause on higher-mileage engines); a stuck or faulty VVT actuator or cam phaser holding the cam out of position; a clogged VVT oil control valve or low, dirty oil affecting cam timing (tie oil condition into the diagnosis); a failed camshaft or crankshaft position sensor, or its wiring, sending offset signals. Take this one seriously rather than hoping it clears. A good shop checks oil level and condition, reads the live cam and crank timing data, and inspects for a stretched chain before settling on the cause. If it truly is a sensor or a gummed oil control valve, the fix is on the lower end. If the timing chain has stretched, that is a real repair with significant labor, so it helps to get the diagnosis in writing so you understand the work involved. The one thing not to do is ignore it, because the failure mode here can be catastrophic.
