Your owner's manual, not the sticker on your windshield, is the real authority.

That short answer hides a lot of nuance, though. The right interval for your car depends on what oil it takes, how you drive, and how honest you are about the second part. Here's how to figure out your actual number — and what genuinely happens when you push past it.

Is the 3,000-Mile Oil Change a Myth?

Yes — for almost any car built since the mid-2000s, the 3,000-mile oil change is a myth. It dates back to an era before modern detergent oils, tighter engine tolerances, and better filtration.
