2018 Ram 1500 alternator replacement: parts and labor

Labor runs $110 to $270 (the job takes 1 to 3 hours at typical independent-shop rates), and the alternator itself typically costs $220 to $460 for the 2018 Ram 1500, plus $15 to $40 in shop supplies and fees. Prices updated September 2026.

EnginePartsLaborEstimated total
3.6L V6$220 to $430$110 to $240 (1.0 to 1.5 hrs)$345 to $710
5.7L V8$230 to $460$110 to $270 (1.0 to 1.7 hrs)$355 to $770

Coverage note: 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (low take rate option in 2018): its 230 amp Denso alternator (OE 56029696AA) has thin aftermarket support, roughly $303 remanufactured to $700 new at RockAuto, plus longer labor on the tightly packaged diesel front end. Including it would stretch the high end several hundred dollars past what the gas trucks actually pay; priced on its own, expect roughly $500 to $1,100 at an independent shop. Also excluded: 2019+ Classic and DT eTorque trucks, which use a 48 volt motor generator, not this part.

RepairPal's 2018-specific estimate is $695 to $1,308, but $597 to $1,165 of that is the parts line, which tracks new Mopar pricing ($471.79 to $730.79 list for the 5.7L units, $560.79 for the 3.6L at RockAuto) rather than the $165 to $360 quality aftermarket and Denso reman market. A dealer installing a new Mopar alternator typically lands $900 to $1,300. YourMechanic's $344 average ($204 parts, $140 labor) leans the other way, reflecting older Ram generations with cheap reman units. Both bracket, rather than represent, what a 2026 independent shop charges with quality aftermarket parts.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FRONT UNDERHOOD

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2018 Jeep Renegade, Compass and Grand Cherokee, RAM 1500 and Promaster, Fiat 500x, Dodge Journey, Challenger, Charger and Durango and Chrysler 300x vehicles, 2017-2018 Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles and 2018-2019 Jeep Cherokee and 2018 Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid vehicles. The powertrain control module may be equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail, causing a stall or a no start condition. A vehicle stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began October 2, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U87.

Real owner report, verbatim from NHTSA:

The contact owns a 2018 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while reversing, the back-over prevention camera malfunctioned and the screen was blank, creating a rear visibility hazard for the driver. Additionally, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled and was towed to the local mechanic. The alternator and battery were replaced on several occasions; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that on another occasion, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the tailgate erroneously opened. The cause of the failures was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 18V398000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION) or 19V347000 (LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failures listed in the recalls. The failure mileage was unknown.

How your charging system works

The battery starts your 2018 Ram 1500; the alternator runs it. Once the engine is on, a belt spins the alternator and it generates the electricity for everything, headlights, computers, ignition, while recharging the battery for the next start. When the alternator quits, the car drains the battery and dies, which is why a bad alternator so often gets misdiagnosed as a bad battery.

The belt spins the alternator, the alternator pushes current to the battery, and the fuse box feeds everything else. When the alternator stops charging, the battery drains and the car dies even though the battery itself may be fine.

Four signs it’s the alternator, not the battery

Battery light while driving

The charging system stopped keeping up. The battery is now running the car alone.

Lights dim at idle

Headlights or dash brighten with revs and dim at a stop. Classic weak-alternator output.

Whine or growl up front

A failing alternator bearing gets noisy before it dies. The pitch rises with engine speed.

Dead battery, again

A new battery that keeps dying was probably never being recharged. Test the alternator first.

The two-minute check: with the engine running, voltage at the battery should read roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Low 12s means the alternator is not charging. Most parts stores run this test free.

What an alternator replacement is like on the 2018 Ram 1500

On both gas engines in the 2018 DS-body Ram 1500 the alternator hangs high on the front of the engine and comes out from the top of the bay: pull the intake tube off the airbox, release the belt tensioner, undo one harness plug and the B+ terminal nut, and pull two to three bolts. Published labor guides quote 1.0 hour for the 3.6L truck and the 5.7L books close to it, though many shops bill 1.5 to 2.0 hours. Nothing about this job changes between 2WD and 4WD, which is why the labor spread stays tight and folds both drivetrains into one row per engine.

The 2018 trucks left the factory with three Denso amperage ratings, and the wrong guess costs a return trip: 3.6L trucks mostly carry the 160 amp unit (Mopar 4801779AG), while HEMIs with tow packages or heavy electrical options got a 180 amp (Mopar 4801769 family) or the optional 220 amp unit (Mopar 56029644AA, Denso 421000-7131). The 220 amp version runs $60 to $100 more in every brand. Check the sales code on the build sheet or window sticker (BAJ is the 220 amp alternator) or read the tag on the old unit before ordering.

When one of these dies it rarely announces itself as an alternator first. Because charging output feeds everything through the TIPM fuse and relay box, sagging voltage on a 2018 Ram throws a cascade of unrelated warnings: traction control, ABS, flickering cluster, then the battery light. Shops see people chasing module problems that turn out to be a $300 alternator. Have the battery load tested at the same visit, because a sulfated battery forces the new alternator to run at full field and shortens its life. On the Pentastar, bearing or decoupler pulley whine is the common early symptom, usually past 100,000 miles.

RepairPal shows $695 to $1,308 for this exact truck, but its parts line is $597 to $1,165, which is essentially new Mopar pricing: the OE HEMI units list $471.79 to $730.79 at RockAuto before any shop markup, and the 3.6L Mopar unit lists $560.79. A quality Denso remanufactured unit for the 5.7L is $300.79 and a TYC new 220 amp unit is $164.79 at the same retailer, which is why an independent shop lands this whole job in the $400 to $770 band. A real chain-store data point: a 2015 Ram 1500 Laramie HEMI owner was quoted about $800 parts and labor at Pep Boys, right at the top of the independent range.

Do not cross-shop quotes with a 2019 or newer Ram 1500. 2018 was the final year the DS platform was the main 1500, and the 2019 DT trucks paired both the 3.6L and 5.7L with eTorque, a 48 volt belt-driven motor generator that replaces the conventional alternator and costs several times more to replace. Quotes for eTorque trucks in the $1,500 to $3,000 range have nothing to do with what a 2018 owner should pay.

Estimate note: these are researched independent-shop ranges, not a guaranteed quote. The only exact number is one from a shop that has seen your car.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does a 2018 Ram 1500 alternator replacement cost?
A 2018 Ram 1500 alternator replacement typically runs $345 to $770 at an independent shop, parts and labor included. The alternator itself is $220 to $460, labor makes up most of the rest, and the job takes 1 to 3 hours.
  • Why does the price change with the engine?
The 2018 Ram 1500 came with more than one engine, and they do not share the same part or the same access. A tighter engine bay or extra teardown adds labor hours, and the part price moves too. Sites that show one national number flatten that out. Pick your engine on the estimate above for a closer figure.
  • How do I know if it's the alternator or the battery?
A battery that only cranks weakly on startup but runs fine afterward is usually the battery. A battery or charging warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle, or a car that dies while running points at the alternator. The clean test is voltage at the battery with the engine running: roughly 13.5 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging, low 12s means it is not. Most parts stores will test both for free, so confirm before buying either part.
  • Can I drive my Ram with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs off the battery alone, and depending on its charge and what is switched on you may get 30 minutes to an hour before the Ram dies, possibly in traffic. Turn off everything you can spare and drive straight to the shop, or have it towed if the warning light has been on a while.
  • How long does an alternator last?
Most factory alternators last roughly 100,000 to 150,000 miles, or 7 to 12 years. Heat, short-trip driving, and heavy electrical loads shorten that. The usual failures are worn brushes, a failing voltage regulator, or a noisy bearing, and the fix is replacement rather than repair on nearly all modern units.
  • Are there recalls on the 2018 Ram 1500?
Yes, NHTSA lists 15 recalls for the 2018 Ram 1500. Recall repairs are done free of charge at a franchised dealer for that brand, so it is worth checking your VIN before paying a shop for related work.
